BALTIMORE (AP) — The Archdiocese of Baltimore has been paying settlements to people who accused a priest of sexually abusing them decades ago at Archbishop Keough High School.
The Baltimore Sun reports (http://bsun.md/2gclr2b) Tuesday that the payments are in response to allegations involving A. Joseph Maskell, who is included in the archdiocese's public list of what it calls credibly accused clergymen.
Maskell denied an initial allegation before he died in 2001, but more people accused him. Attorney Sheldon Jacobs says about a dozen people, mostly women, have reached out-of-court settlements in recent months. He declined to say how large the settlements are.
Archdiocese spokesman Sean Caine confirmed that "settlements with victims of Joseph Maskell have been ongoing since at least 2011," but he didn't have information Monday on how much has been paid.
