ST. GEORGE — Imagine what you would think being at the biggest marching band competition of the season, to find out you didn't have a uniform to compete in.

The band was competing in St. George over the weekend but their uniforms were forgotten and left back at the school four hours away.

“So overloaded with emotions already anyway, I was kind of not knowing how to react and so it was half panic and half blank,” said Lone Peak marching band member Kirsten Hamilton.

But as word got around among the Lone Peak band moms through text messages, band moms from American Fork high had a solution.

"We took apart the sashes and gauntlets and pinned those on their uniforms,” said American Fork band mom Mati Mayfield. “We took everything we could to cover that red so when they went out there on the field, they looked like their band and they felt like their band."

The help came as a surprise to many of the American Fork band members.

"I saw them walk up onto the field and I was like, ‘Those capes look really familiar and … those uniforms look really familiar,’” said American Fork marching band member Kiersten Dupaix. “Then I saw they were wearing our uniforms and I was like, ‘Oh my goodness, that is so cool! Our rival schools are both wearing the same uniforms to compete in.’”

Unlike athletics where the two schools compete in the same division, in band, American Fork is 5A and Lone Peak is a 3A band.

"They both took first place in state,” said Lone Peak band mom Carolyn Hamilton. “It is pretty remarkable and it is something American Fork has been known for, but they are also so good to us.”

Lone Peak made a big card to tell American Fork thanks. Band mom Erica Miller has children in both bands and couldn't be happier.

“This weekend was fantastic seeing the comradery, how they really came together,” she said. “It was beautiful to see American Fork helping Lone Peak.”
