SAN DIEGO (AP) — President Barack Obama has stops in Nevada and California today as part of his effort to pick up the pace of the political campaign to elect Hillary Clinton to succeed him and seize control of the Senate. At a Nevada stop last night, Obama said state voters have a winning hand in Clinton and Senate candidate Catherine Cortez Masto. Obama said Republican Donald Trump is unfit.
MIDDLEBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — State police say a deadly early morning crash on a Massachusetts highway was caused by a wrong way driver. Five people died when a vehicle traveling south on the northbound side of Interstate 495 in Middleborough struck a vehicle heading in the correct direction. The driver of the wrong-way vehicle and four people in the other car were killed.
PALM SPRINGS, Calif. (AP) — Federal investigators are due to arrive in California to begin the process of sorting out the crash of a tour bus that killed 13 people and injured 31. The tour bus returning to Los Angeles from a casino trip slammed into the back of a semi-truck in one of the deadliest wrecks in California history.
BAGHDAD (AP) — Iran is wading into a dispute between Iraq and Turkey. Iran says Turkey should get permission from Iraq's government to participate in the operation to take back Mosul from the Islamic State group. Some 500 Turkish troops stationed at a base near Mosul are training Iraqi Sunni and Kurdish forces. Iraq's government says the Turks should leave but Turkey refuses to leave. The fight for Mosul is in its second week.
CAPE MAY POINT, N.J. (AP) — A ship that figured in the real "Perfect Storm" story is about to begin a new phase of service that will do what years of ocean storms couldn't -- send it to the bottom. Officials tell The Record newspaper the Coast Guard vessel Tamaroa will be sunk this month to help grow a reef off New Jersey. Tamaroa helped rescue seven people in what was portrayed in the book and film "The Perfect Storm."
