SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- A woman who counsels crime victims for the Salt Lake County District Attorney's Office has been charged with the alleged burglary of a Sandy home.
Xan C. Kali, 40, was charged Friday in 3rd District court with one count of second-degree felony burglary and multiple counts of third-degree felony criminal mischief and credit card fraud.
Second-degree felonies are punishable by up to 15 years in prison. Third-degree felonies carry a penalty of up to five years in prison.
Two men whom prosecutors say participated in the burglary have also been charged.
Kali works for the Salt Lake County District Attorney in the crime victim counseling unit.
Court documents on file allege that on July 1, Kali and four accomplices -- two men and two 17-year-old girls -- broke into a Sandy home and pried open an office door to steal a credit card which they used to buy $1,500 worth of clothing.
Sandy police also say the group smashed a safe by dropping it out of a second-story window, and damaged a car while trying to hot-wire it. Estimated damages to the home are more than $1,000 court documents state.
The homeowner, who was on vacation, called police after his credit card company contacted him about unusual purchase. He told police he suspected his 17-year-old daughter, who had run away.
Police made a check of the house on July 2, finding Kali and the four others inside, including the homeowner's daughter, drinking wine.
Kali will appear in court Oct. 11. To avoid a conflict of interest, the case is being prosecuted by Davis County Attorney Melvin Wilson.
