PROVO, Utah (AP) -- Provo city leaders are making graffiti a bit harder to do in their city.
The council on Wednesday approved a new measure making it a crime to carry spray paint and other items used in graffiti with the intent to do illegal street art. The measure also requires vandals to pay for cleaning up the damage.
Violating the ordinance would be a class B misdemeanor, punishable by up to six months in jail and a $1,000 fine.
Councilman Steve Turley was one of two on the council who voted against the measure. He says police reports show graffiti cases are down 54 percent and that new ordinance is unnecessary.
