BRIGHAM CITY — A construction worker was critically injured Friday after he became trapped in a concrete paver used in I-15 construction near Brigham City.

Around 2:30 p.m., the 39-year-old Layton man was working under the paver and operating an instrument called a dowel bar inserter when "somehow he got inside and was caught by the device and pinned, and the device crushed against him," the Utah Highway Patrol said in a statement.

The man was taken by helicopter to McKay-Dee Hospital in Ogden in critical condition, UHP trooper Evan Kirby said.

Kirby didn't know how the man became trapped.
