CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — The streets of Charlotte, North Carolina, are quiet this morning following yesterday's angry protests over the fatal police shooting of a black man who was reportedly armed. Authorities used tear gas to trying to break up demonstrations, during which 12 officers were injured and marked police vehicles were destroyed. TV footage showed dozens of people on Interstate 85, looting semi-trucks and setting their contents on fire on the highway.
WASHINGTON (AP) — The head of pharmaceutical company Mylan will appear before Congress today to defend the rising cost of the life-saving EpiPen. Its price has gone up more than 500 percent since 2007, and now costs $608 for a two-pack. In prepared testimony before the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, CEO Heather Bresch says she believes Mylan has struck a balance between price and access to the drug.
GENEVA (AP) — A U.N. expert says the world community should do more to help North Korea cope with fallout from a deadly typhoon three weeks ago, and he says North Korean officials should allow access to those in need. Tomas Ojea (oh-HAY'-uh) Quintana, the U.N. special rapporteur on human rights in North Korea, points to U.N. estimates that more than 140,000 people require assistance after Typhoon Lionrock killed at least 138 people in the northeastern part of the country.
ANKARA, Turkey (AP) — An Israeli official says an attacker armed with a knife tried to enter the Israeli Embassy in Turkey today before being shot and slightly wounded by Turkish security officials. He says all Israeli Embassy staff members are safe and the attacker is in custody. Turkey's private NTV television and other media reports say the man walked past the embassy building several times, raising suspicion, before trying to enter the building.
DEARBORN HEIGHTS, Mich. (AP) — Police in suburban Detroit say they've taken one person into custody after finding four siblings dead and their mother critically injured in an attack in their home. Police in Dearborn Heights say the family was found early today, and that the killings appear to have stemmed from "a domestic violence-type situation." The siblings were ages 19, 17, 6 and 4.
