AUBURN, Ala. (AP) — Auburn defensive back Stephen Roberts won't play against No. 2 Clemson following his arrest on two misdemeanor charges.

Tigers coach Gus Malzahn said Tuesday that Roberts is suspended for Saturday night's opener. After that, Malzahn says Roberts' status will be week to week and, "We'll see how he responds."

Roberts was arrested last week and charged with attempting to elude an officer and possessing a firearm without a license.

Auburn police said the 20-year-old Roberts was a passenger in a vehicle during a traffic stop and attempted to flee from the officer.

Roberts has been competing for the starting job at free safety after making 26 tackles last season. He started the final four games.

The starting safeties will be Johnathan Ford and Tray Matthews.
