CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — The Medical University of South Carolina Hospital is suing the state's largest health insurer for not paying properly for care of Medicaid patients.
The Post and Courier of Charleston reported (http://bit.ly/2b2g94m) the hospital says BlueChoice HealthPlan of South Carolina was supposed to pay 60 percent of the $4 million in care the hospital provided Medicare patients.
The hospital does not normally treat patients covered in the low-income BlueChoice plans. The hospital and insurance company have made exceptions on a case-by-case basis.
Hospital CEO Dr. Patrick Cawley says the hospital has tried to work with the company but no agreement has been reached.
The lawsuit says the insurance company met its obligations on several contracts but is refusing to do so for others.
An insurance company spokeswoman would not comment.
