SALT LAKE CITY — Salt Lake police have arrested a man who they believe fired 28 rounds into a rival gang member's house.

The incident also resulted in a Salt Lake police officer accidentally shooting himself in the foot while setting up a containment area to capture the man.

Quinton Austin Medina, 19, of Salt Lake City, was arrested in connection with the shooting. He was booked into jail for investigation of felony discharge of a firearm.

About 4:30 a.m. Saturday, Medina's father received a call from a woman who claimed his son was not breathing and needed help, according to a Salt Lake County Jail report. Police were unsure Monday if the call was legitimate or made just to get the father's attention.

When the father drove to the apartment complex where his son was staying, he spotted his son's vehicle driving away, police said. He followed it to an area near 500 South and 1600 West where he watched the car pull over and saw someone inside fire multiple rounds at a house, the report states.

The house is "widely known in the gang community" as belonging to a sect of violent gang members, according to the report.

The man's father called police, and after the vehicle was spotted, officers attempted to pull it over but it fled. The car was later found abandoned near 1300 N. Mandalay Road (1910 West) where it had crashed into another parked car, police said.

Officers eventually found Medina and arrested him. While searching for him, a Salt Lake police officer accidentally shot himself in the foot with his rifle, said Salt Lake police detective Cody Lougy. That officer had surgery on his foot and was later released from the hospital, he said.
