COTTONWOOD HEIGHTS — A 62-year-old California woman involved in a fatal crash has been booked into the Salt Lake County Jail on suspicion of vehicular homicide and driving under the influence.
Cottonwood Heights police say Sally Sturtevant told them she was heading to an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting before a crash that that killed a motorcyclist Thursday night.
The collision happened on Highland Drive near 6900 South. Cottonwood Heights Police Lt. Mark Askerlund said Sturtevant attempted a left-hand turn in front of a motorcyclist — later identified as Rodney Russell, 43, of Sandy — and struck his motorcycle.
Russell was pronounced dead at the scene.
The crash closed down Highland Drive for several hours.
Cottonwood Heights Police Sgt. Scott Peck said investigators interviewed Sturtevant after the crash and had “reason to believe she was impaired.” Sturtevant told officers at the scene she had been drinking and a breathalyzer test indicated she had a blood alcohol content of .097 percent, according to a jail report.
Blood test results were pending, the document said.
Jail records show Sturtevant was being held on $40,000 bond.
