SALT LAKE CITY — A wildfire raging near the Utah-Wyoming border caused two highways to be closed Thursday evening.

The fire reached 1,500 acres near the Meeks Cabin Reservoir that straddles the two states. Wyoming state Routes 271 and 410 were closed to traffic due to heavy smoke and were being used by emergency fire responders only, according to Tony Brown, spokesman for the Bureau of Land Management's Wyoming High Desert District.

The fire also prompted the evacuations of the Uinta (Wyoming) County Youth Camp.

The fire first ignited Thursday, but the cause remains unknown, Brown said. Fire investigators were dispatched to the scene.

Brown asked anyone with information about the cause of the fire to call Kevin Cahill, a BLM fire management officer, at 307-352-0236.

The fire was burning in terrain thickly populated with timber, sage brush and grass and was moving east Thursday night.

Several aircraft and ground crews were still arriving to fight the fire, Brown said. He asked that nearby residents and curious onlookers stay away from the blaze.

"Fire behavior can change and fire spread is unpredictable if high winds develop," Brown said in a statement.
