SALT LAKE CITY — An 18-year-old man sustained serious injuries Sunday night after he allegedly drove under the influence on I-215 and crashed, officials said.
Sandy resident Mckiennen Haslam was driving at an excessive speed around 9 p.m. on I-215 East when the incident occurred. He was driving a gray Mazda 3 northbound at the ramp to Parleys Canyon when he lost control on the curve and hit a concrete barrier, launching his car about 30 yards down a ravine, according to Utah Highway Patrol.
Haslam fled the scene before troopers arrived, and he went to a local hospital. Troopers spoke to him at the hospital, and he said he was speeding and was not wearing his seat belt, UHP reported.
Police arrested Haslam on suspicion of driving under the influence, but he is currently at Intermountain Medical Center, according to UHP.
