BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Authorities say the gunman who killed two Baton Rouge, Louisiana police officers and a sheriff's deputy Sunday was a former Marine sergeant who served in Iraq. Authorities say 29-year-old Gavin Eugene Long of Kansas City, Missouri, opened fire near a convenience store and beauty supply shop, killing the officers and wounding three others. Long was shot dead by police.

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) —Vice President Joe Biden is condemning the slaying of three police officers in Louisiana, calling the shootings a "despicable act." Biden made the comments Monday during a speech at a Boeing factory in Australia. Biden says the public owes police officers in general a debt of gratitude for putting their lives on the line.

CLEVELAND (AP) — The Republican National Convention kicks off Monday, and instead of it being a "showbiz" convention as Donald Trump had promised, it's shaping up to be a staid family-focused affair. The convention lineup features everyday Americans, successful business people and four of Trump's five children. Campaign chairman, Paul Manafort says the plan is to " help the American people understand more about Donald Trump the man, not just the candidate that they've seen on the campaign trail."

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Hundreds of people on Sunday night attended a candlelight vigil for a Texas father and son who were killed in the truck attack in Nice, France. The attack during a Bastille Day celebration took the lives of 84 people, including 51-year-old Sean Copeland and his 11-year-old son Brodie. The University of California, Berkeley says one of its students was also killed in the attack. Twenty-year-old Nicolas Leslie of Del Mar, California, was a junior at Berkeley's College of Natural Resources.

BOSTON (AP) — More and more college presidents are passing the $1 million mark in annual pay. A survey by The Chronicle of Higher Education finds that the median total pay for public university presidents reached $431,000 in the 2015 fiscal year. That's up 4.3 percent from the year before. The survey also says that five presidents received more than $1 million. That's three more than the year before.
