ORANGEVILLE, Emery County — A 65-year-old Pleasant Grove woman died Monday in an all-terrain vehicle crash while traveling down a steep hill in Cottonwood Canyon on the road to the Indian Creek Campground, officials with the Emery County Sheriff's Office said.

Deputies said the woman was traveling around a steep curve in the road about 3:30 p.m. when the ATV skidded, flipped and rolled on top of her. Investigators estimate she was going 17 to 20 mph. Her husband was traveling behind her and attended to her after the crash.

A couple from Emery County happened upon the scene about 10 minutes later, officials said, and stopped to help. The woman, who is a nurse, stayed at the scene while her husband traveled several miles down the canyon until he had cellphone service.

The woman, who was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, suffered fatal head injuries and died at the scene.

The identity of the victim will be released pending notification of the family.
