Utah is keeping up with the rest of the nation when it comes to housing numbers, and that isn't a good thing.

Nationally, housing starts are at their lowest number in more than 17 years.

Locally, Curt Dowdle of the Utah Homebuilder's Association says it's not so good either.

Some of our builders have started doing work that they wouldn't have before. For instance, finishing basements, building decks, remodel."

By this time last year, Construction Monitor reported about 7,800 housing starts in the Wasatch Front. This year, it's just over 2,600. But Dowdle says there are signs things are improving, and he points out that his is a cyclical business.
