(KSL News) -- To help reduce the number of vehicles in Albion Basin, the town of Alta began free shuttle bus service today.

Two 14-passenger vans will operate on the weekends from 10 in the morning to 4:30 pm. The vans will leave the information booth at the ski area parking lot every 20 minutes or so.

The Albion Basin is a popular spot during the summertime, and especially now as the wildflowers are in bloom. The downside is that traffic and congestion is damaging roadside vegetation, and stirring up dust.

Mike Morey, Alta Police Dept.: "What we'd like to do is minimize the impact to the area. It's a very sensitive watershed area."

Cameron Morris, Shuttle Rider: "I would have preferred to drive, but you know, there's only so much room. So now we can all go up."

The shuttles will make three stops along the Albion Basin dirt road. Shuttle service isn't mandatory, but is encouraged. The busses will run through Labor Day.
