BIG COTTONWOOD CANYON — Unified police have identified the Sandy girl who drowned in a cliff jumping accident in Lake Mary Friday.

Unified police said Anya Ng, 15, jumped from a rock around 4 p.m. at the lake, which is southeast of Brighton Resort, when she either awkwardly leaped or slipped, Unified police detective Ken Hansen said.

Hansen said the girl hit rocks on the shore before sliding into the water. He added bystanders rushed into the water to try to rescue the girl, but were unable to find her. A search and rescue dive team found Ng’s body about 18 feet under the water just before 8 p.m. Friday in an area close to where she had jumped.

"It’s just a tragic accident," Hansen said Friday.

Hansen said the rock where Ng and the friends she was jumping with stands about 25 feet above the shoreline and appears to be a popular spot for cliff jumping.

He added that the water in that area is a protected watershed and shouldn't be used for that activity. Lake Mary has frigid temperatures between 36 and 38 degrees.
