SALT LAKE CITY — It is the hottest show on Broadway and tickets are nearly impossible to get. But there's exciting news for Utahns: "Hamilton" is on its way here.
Outside the Richard Rogers Theatre on Broadway a sign proclaims "Hamilton" is "the most exciting musical of the decade."
"It’s just amazing!" one New York theatergoer told KSL News. "You get to hear all these stories — and it’s not just about Hamilton, it’s about everyone he came across on his journey, it’s absolutely amazing!”
Based on the life of Founding Father Alexander Hamilton, with its hip-hop music and clever staging, "Hamilton" broke the mold of Broadway musicals and garnered a record 16 Tony nominations this year — ultimately winning 11 of the awards Sunday night.
Now comes the news from Broadway At the Eccles that " Hamilton" will come to Salt Lake City's new Eccles Theatre for its 2017-18 season.
"We have this fantastic new theater in a market that’s one of the strongest Broadway markets we work in around the country," said Steve Boulay, chief operating officer of MagicSpace Entertainment, which partners with Broadway Across America.
"Producers looked at that combination and said, ‘Salt Lake moves way up, two, three years in the rankings,' and that’s where we are," Boulay said.
Those who have already purchased tickets for the Eccles Theatre's first season and renew their subscription will be guaranteed seats for the Utah premiere of "Hamilton" before tickets become available to the general public.
The performances dates will be announced later. For more information, visit www.broadway-at-the-eccles.com
