WASHINGTON (AP) — Bernie Sanders' presidential campaign is downsizing as it reaches the final primary next week in Washington, D.C. About half of the staff is being laid off with most of the jobs involving field staff and advance aides. That's according to two people familiar with the plans. Sanders had previously reduced his staff and redeployed most of his team to California ahead of yesterday's primary. Hillary Clinton has secured enough pledged delegates and superdelegates combined to secure the Democratic nomination. She defeated Sanders in California, New Jersey and two other states yesterday.
WASHINGTON (AP) — One of Donald Trump's first supporters in the House says Speaker Paul Ryan has reaffirmed his support for Trump in a closed-door meeting with fellow GOP lawmakers. New York's Chris Collins says Ryan opened today's session by telling lawmakers that he remains comfortable backing Trump. Collins said "there was no controversy in the room" over the comments, but no applause, either. The meeting came a day after Ryan labeled as "racist" Trump's assertion that an American-born judge of Mexican descent couldn't handle a Trump lawsuit fairly. But Ryan said he would continue supporting Trump.
LONDON (AP) — Maria Sharapova has been suspended for two years by the International Tennis Federation for testing positive for meldonium at the Australian Open. She says she will appeal. The five-time Grand Slam champion was provisionally suspended by the ITF in early March, when she announced at a news conference in Los Angeles that she failed a doping test in January. Sharapova said then she was not aware that the World Anti-Doping Agency had barred athletes from using meldonium.
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — Court documents allege that a former astronaut who is now charged with reckless murder tried to take the vehicle of a passer-by after a deadly crash in rural Alabama. The claim is included in a state trooper's description of the wreck that led to the arrest of five-time space shuttle flier James Halsell. The officer wrote that Halsell appeared extremely intoxicated after a crash that killed two girls early Monday. The officer's statement says a motorist who stopped to offer aid told officers the one-time astronaut tried to take his pickup truck. Halsell was still on the scene when officers arrived.
MCENTIRE JOINT NATIONAL GUARD BASE, S.C. (AP) — The fire chief in Jefferson County, Georgia, confirms there were no injuries on the ground when two South Carolina Air National Guard fighter jets collided over a bombing range. Chief Jim Anderson says the area where the planes came down Tuesday night is a very rural section of the county. First responders say the pilots were talking normally when they were found. They were taken to a hospital as a precaution.
