SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Officials say the CEO of a Utah-based home security company has been released by Mexican authorities after his truck crashed in an off-road race and killed an 8-year-old boy.
Vivint CEO Todd Pederson was released Sunday after questioning by authorities, Juan Manuel Yepiz, spokesman for the State Attorney's office in Ensenada, Baja, told the Deseret News (http://bit.ly/1ratPzk).
Pederson crashed near the start line in the SCORE Baja 500 race when he failed to negotiate a turn, race officials said. Pederson was trying to avoid hitting spectators, but he crashed into three people, they said.
A report from Ensenada police provided to The Associated Press says a man identified as "Todd N" lost control of his truck while trying to make a turn and crashed into a group of people who were outside the permitted area for spectators. The front of his truck hit the two people who were injured, the report says.
The boy was pronounced dead at a hospital, the report says. His mother was hospitalized in stable condition with head and leg injuries. Details on the third victim were not immediately available.
Pedersen says in a statement that he's devastated and his heart goes out to the family.
