(KSL News) -- Former governor Mike Leavitt is under fire for a charitable donation his family gave last year.

A 500-thousand dollar donation from Dixie and Anne Leavitt Foundation went to the Southern Utah Foundation. Funds flowed through Southern Utah University as housing scholarships and eventually recycled to the Leavitts as student rent in family owned apartments.

This resulted in hundreds of thousands of dollars in tax- deductible donations.

Some Southern Utah Foundation board members say the money provided Leavitt with tax deductions and income.

The Foundation's president says the deal was reviewed by lawyers and found to be legal.
