SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Some residents of unincorporated Salt Lake County and West Valley City want to be able to legally raise chickens in their backyards.
County ordinances ban chickens on residential lots smaller than a half-acre.
In West Valley City, chickens are only allowed in agricultural zones.
Chicken owners who want inexpensive eggs and their own control over food supply say they want the laws to change.
West Valley City is drafting an ordinance that would allow chickens in city limits under certain conditions, such as regularly cleaning their coops. In Salt Lake County, Mayor Peter Corroon is requesting a report from health officials on the implications of allowing suburban chickens into neighborhoods.
