SALT LAKE CITY — A Salt Lake man set his sister's apartment on fire and tried to block her inside as it was burning, criminal charges filed Thursday allege.

Kyle Hall, 27, is charged in 3rd District Court with aggravated arson, a first-degree felony.

Hall allegedly started the fire around 2:30 a.m. Sunday in his sister's Salt Lake apartment on Redwood Road. The woman awoke at 2:30 a.m. and noticed a fire in her kitchen, charging documents say.

"(The woman) jumped up to put the flames out, but Hall pushed her and said, ... 'You better stop,'" charges state.

Hall then placed clothing and bedding inside the women's oven and turned it on, causing them to catch fire, according to court documents. He allegedly also stacked a removed vehicle seat and a safe against a door in an attempt to keep the woman from leaving.

The woman was able to escape the apartment and alerted her neighbors to the fire.

Hall fled the area, charges state. He was arrested Monday in Salt Lake and booked into the Salt Lake County Jail, where he remained Thursday.

An investigation of the fire indicated it was deliberately ignited using the oven, court documents say. The fire caused about $30,000 in damage.

No initial court date is currently set in Hall's case. A search of court records indicates he has no previous criminal history in Utah.
