SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A man has pleaded guilty to charges related to his involvement in a shootout with emergency crews after crashing his car into a natural gas line near the Utah-Idaho border.

The Herald-Journal reports that Cade Austin, of Preston, Idaho, pleaded guilty Tuesday to reduced charges of attempted murder and aggravated assault as part of a plea deal in connection with the December incident.

Austin's attorney says his client entered the guilty plea to avoid a prison sentence of five years to life.

Prosecutors say Austin crashed his vehicle near Lewiston, Utah and started shooting at emergency workers who came to help. One of the responders had returned fire, injuring Austin.

Authorities say Austin still refused to get out of his car and continued drinking alcohol until he passed out.
