WYNNEWOOD, Okla. (AP) — Severe weather is churning in the Plains. An emergency official in Oklahoma says a large tornado killed an elderly man at a home near the town of Wynnewood. Officials in other communities said a number of homes were damaged by tornadoes. The Storm Prediction Center said portions of the Plains and the Ozarks face a "substantial tornado risk" into the night.

WASHINGTON (AP) — North Carolina Republican Gov. Pat McCrory, who will be on the ballot in November, has taken the government to court to defend a transgender restroom law the Justice Department says amounts to illegal sex discrimination. It filed suit today as well. McCrory calls the law a "commonsense privacy policy."

WASHINGTON (AP) — More frank talk from House Speaker Paul Ryan about his party's presumptive nominee, Donald Trump. Ryan says he'd step down as co-chairman of the Republican National Convention if Trump asked him to. Ryan, who's withholding his support for now, also told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that a third-party or independent run for president by conservatives upset with Donald Trump "would be a disaster for our party."

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) — Police say a Kansas City, Kansas, detective was shot and killed, and a man who'd been sought for questioning was later wounded and arrested after a shootout with police in neighboring Missouri. Police say the detective was shot at least twice while helping respond to a report of a suspicious person near the Kansas Speedway.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The man who played Patty Duke's father, and uncle -- has died. Veteran TV performer and Hollywood union leader William Schallert died Sunday at his California home. In 1980, Schallert led the union as it staged a 13-week strike over such issues as actors' pay for films made for the then-new cable television industry. He was 93.
