LISBON, Portugal (AP) — Striker Islam Slimani scored two goals as Sporting Lisbon defeated Porto 3-1 on Saturday to remain two points behind Benfica with two rounds left in the Portuguese league.
Slimani opened in the 23rd minute and added his second just before the break after the hosts had equalized through Hector Herrera in the 34th at the Stadium of the Dragon. Midfielder Bruno Cesar sealed the victory with an 85th-minute goal.
The win gave Sporting 80 points, two behind two-time defending champion Benfica, which edged Guimaraes 1-0 at home on Friday.
Sporting is trying to win its first title since the 2001-02 season.
Porto has ensured a third-place finish with 67 points, gaining a Champions League playoff spot.
