SALT LAKE CITY — A 22-month-old boy died after drowning in a pond Friday outside a northern Salt Lake County home, police said.

Several children were playing at a home at 2825 N. Rose Park Lane around 6:45 p.m. when one of them noticed the boy was missing, said Unified police detective Ken Hansen.

One of the children contacted the boy's mother, who began looking for him and "found him floating in a pond (on) the property face up," Hansen said.

The mother tried to revive the boy with CPR, the detective said. He was soon after airlifted to Primary Children's Hospital, where he died.

The boy was in "very grave" condition by the time he arrived at the hospital, according to Hansen.

"He’d been in the water for some time," Hansen said.

The boy's name was not immediately released.
