COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — A middle school math teacher from Columbia is South Carolina's new Teacher of the Year.

State Superintendent of Education Molly Spearman announced during a banquet Wednesday that the honor goes to Jennifer Wise, a 7th and 8th grade math teacher at Hand Middle School.

Wise was selected from a group of finalists from school districts across the state.

The Teacher of the Year wins $25,000 and gets to drive a new BMW for a year.

The winner also participates in the 2017 class of Leadership South Carolina and serves for a year as teacher in residence at the Center for Educator Recruitment, Retention and Advancement.
