NEW YORK (AP) — Exit polling shows the majority of New Yorkers who have cast ballots in today's presidential primary are most concerned about the economy. And many are worried about the influence of Wall Street. About 6 in 10 Democrats regard Wall Street as detrimental to the U.S. economy, while 3 in 10 say the New York City financial sector helps. GOP voters were nearly even on the question.
NEW YORK (AP) — A former New York police officer who shot an unarmed man to death in a darkened stairwell won't have to go to prison. A judge reduced Peter Liang's manslaughter conviction to a lesser charge in a case that became a flashpoint for police accountability. Liang was sentenced to five years' probation and 800 hours of community service in the 2014 shooting of Akai Gurley.
ST. LOUIS (AP) — A federal judge in St. Louis has given final approval to an agreement between Ferguson, Missouri, and the Justice Department. It calls for sweeping changes in city courts and the police department. The suburb is where there was racial unrest over the fatal police shooting of 18-year-old Michael Brown. Judge Catherine Perry calls the settlement is a "reasonable resolution" that avoids an extensive court battle.
MANTA, Ecuador (AP) — Officials in Ecuador say the death toll from Saturday's earthquake has risen to 480. Another 2,000 people have been reported as missing to a government registry created to track casualties. But it's not clear if all of those people remain unaccounted for. In Washington, the White House says President Barack Obama has called Ecuador's leader to offer condolences and to commit aid.
HOUSTON (AP) — The death toll from severe flooding in the Houston area has reached at least six. The latest victim was recovered from a flooded car in a drainage ditch. More than a foot of rain has fallen since the weekend. Flooding has become almost annual in Houston, which is practically flat, at sea level and has soft soil often called "gumbo."
