MANTA, Ecuador (AP) — Rescuers in Ecuador continue to search for dozens of people who remain unaccounted for after Saturday's 7.8-magnitude earthquake. Three people were pulled out alive this morning after more than 32 hours in the rubble of a shopping center. The rescue has given hope to family members of the missing. Emergency officials say a person without serious injuries can survive up to a week under the rubble.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Vice President Joe Biden is criticizing Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's steady expansion of settlements as moving Israel in the wrong direction. But he says the U.S. has an obligation to push its ally toward peace with Palestinians despite a sometimes "overwhelming frustration" with Israel's government. Biden made the comments in a speech to the advocacy group J Street. He also criticized Palestinian leaders for failing to condemn recent acts of terrorism committed by Palestinians against Israelis.
NEW YORK (AP) — Donald Trump has wrapped up his last day of campaigning before New York's primary with an unfortunate slip-of-the-tongue. Trump was speaking to a crowd at a campaign stop in Buffalo when he mistakenly mentioned the name of a popular convenience store chain in place of 9/11. Trump told the crowd the tragedy is very close to his heart because he was "down there" and watched police and firemen "down at 7/11, down at the World Trade Center right after it came down."
GROSSE POINTE, Mich. (AP) — Screenings have revealed elevated lead and copper levels in the water at six of 15 public schools in the Detroit suburb of Grosse Pointe. Ten of 130 samples exceeded federal standards and water fountains above the federal action level have been disconnected. Detroit Schools said last week that elevated levels of lead and copper were found in water fountains or kitchens at 19 of 62 schools tested.
JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) — An Alaska outdoor studies assistant professor is in the hospital after being mauled by a bear while teaching a mountaineering class. Forest Wagner was with a group of 12 students when he was attacked. A student had to hike down the mountain to get cell reception before being able to call for help. Wagner's condition is not yet known.
