WASHINGTON (AP) — The Obama administration is blaming a global crisis in governance as well as atrocities committed by non-state actors, such as the Islamic State group, for a decline in human rights standards around the world. In its annual human rights report, the State Department says governments in 2015 pushed back against groups that seek to empower ordinary people and fight corruption.
NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. health officials say there's no longer any doubt that the Zika (ZEE'-kuh) virus causes babies to be born with abnormally small heads and other severe brain defects. Signs of the virus have been found in tissue and fluid samples in those babies. Zika, which is spread primarily through mosquito bites, has been sweeping through Latin America and the Caribbean.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Nearly 2 in 3 Americans back Democrats' demands that the Republican-run Senate hold hearings and a vote on President Barack Obama's pick for the Supreme Court. But an Associated Press-GfK poll also suggests that GOP resistance to even considering the nominee may not hurt the party much because to many people, it's simply not a big deal.
NEW YORK (AP) — The actor who was for three decades the voice of cereal mascot Lucky the Leprechaun in TV commercials has died in New York. Arthur Anderson was 93. Anderson stopped singing that Lucky Charms are "magically delicious" in 1992. Anderson also appeared on Broadway in the movies "Midnight Cowboy" and Woody Allen's "Zelig," and on TV's "Law & Order."
