The other day Ethan on Nightside sais that by leaving a poor tip, we are denying the servers of America was is rightfully theirs because they depend on tips, etc. No no no. If they perform valiantly, they should be rewarded. Otherwise, sorry.
A few days ago I stopped into a restaurant with my kids and was given more than just a little attitude when we just wanted water to drink. "So, you JUST want water, then?...." he said. "Yes, please" we replied. "Well, ALL RIGHT" he tossed over his shoulder as he walked away, somewhat irritated.
We all had a nice meal, no fancy overpriced drinks, no appetizers because we had spent the afternoon at the ballgame supporting the vendors at Franklin Covey, and finally, no dessert. The server lost his enthusiasm for us quickly and transferred it to another table where they were ordering more liberally.
So, here's the question; should my server be any less enthused about us if we eat more modestly than the patrons at another table? I say no. He (or she) should be glad we're there at all. He did wish us a pleasant evening and I left a tip and I will no doubt be back because it's a good restaurant. But it's not the first time I've gotten a raised eyebrow when just drinking water and not ordering an appetizer or a dessert. That behavior will always affect the amount of gratuity I leave. And, in fact, may alter my future choice of a place to have dinner. I have been to several nice restaurants where I have been treated like a privileged patron no matter what I order. Or don't order. That's the way it should be.
