FARMINGTON, Utah (AP) — A Utah school district says a student injured in 2014 while wearing goggles to simulate drunkenness was the victim of an unfortunate accident.

The Standard-Examiner reports that the parents of then-13-year-old Kylie Nielsen are suing the Davis School District and former teacher Rick Smith for negligence and recklessness. The suit says Smith encouraged students to play tag while wearing the "drunk goggles" before Nielsen severely twisted her ankle and received multiple bone fractures.

District spokesman Chris Williams says the Centennial Junior High School teacher made a mistake and has since resigned from the school district, although he didn't say when or give a reason.

Andrew and Camille Nielsen of Kaysville filed the $275,000 lawsuit on March 31.

Efforts to contact Smith were unsuccessful.
