NEWCASTLE, England (AP) — Newcastle says goalkeeper Rob Elliot will be out for "a number of months" after injuring his anterior cruciate ligament in a warm-up match with Ireland ahead of the European Championship.
Elliot was carried off on a stretcher in the 14th minute of Ireland's 2-2 friendly draw against Slovakia on Tuesday.
The injury rules him out the European Championship in June and will dent Newcastle's attempt to retain its Premier League status.
Elliott says he felt "a wave of emotion knowing I'd miss the rest of the season with Newcastle and the Euros with Ireland."
Newcastle is second last in the league standings, three points from safety with eight games left.
Elliot is Newcastle's second-choice goalkeeper, but has played regularly since October when first-choice Tim Krul injured his cruciate ligament.
