COTTONWOOD HEIGHTS — Police were looking Sunday for a man who used a box truck to steal an ATM machine.
About 3 a.m., someone smashed the glass door of Holiday Oil, 2235 E. Ft. Union Blvd., tied a tow rope around an ATM machine and used the truck to pull out the ATM, said Cottonwood Heights police detective Ryan Shosted.
The truck, which was determined to be stolen, was later found abandoned in West Jordan, he said. The ATM machine was gone.
Surveillance video shows a larger man wearing a bandana over his face, a blue coat, blue jeans, and a ball cap with camouflage colors.
The burglary is similar to two recent attempted ATM thefts in Taylorsville.
On Feb. 28, sometime between 3 a.m. and 5:20 a.m., two men attempted to use a large box truck to steal an ATM from Rite Aid, 1837 W. 4700 South, said Unified police detective Ken Hansen. A short time later, they attempted to steal an ATM at Holiday Oil, 6189 S. 3200 West.
While causing extensive damage to the Rite Aid store, in both cases the men were unable to remove the ATM machines from the businesses, Hansen said.
It was not immediately known whether Sunday's incident is connected to the other two.
Anyone with information on any of the ATM theft and theft attempts is asked to call police at 801-743-7000.
