SOUTH SALT LAKE — A man crashed into several vehicles and carjacked an SUV and a truck in a string of incidents Friday afternoon across Salt Lake County, police said.
The man was driving a Subaru around 1 p.m. when he crashed into a business and "several" parked vehicles at 300 West between 2600 South and 2700 South, said Salt Lake police detective Cody Lougy.
The Subaru he was driving at the time was either stolen or carjacked, according to police.
The man then allegedly carjacked an SUV and continued driving. He caused additional crashes, first at 600 West and 2700 South and later at 500 West and 3300 South, Lougy said. After the second crash, he carjacked a pickup truck, according to Lougy.
The man reportedly later exited the truck and got into a blue van, which police continued to search for Friday in the area of 1000 North and 900 West. The driver, who remained on the loose, was black, with a shaved head and wearing a black hoodie. He was wearing a San Francisco 49ers hoodie earlier during the string of crashes but at some point discarded it, the detective said.
In all, the man hit 12 vehicles in the incidents within a span of nine minutes, Lougy said.
Police were not pursuing the man, and it wasn't clear why he continued to crash into other vehicles, Lougy said. The detective said it was possible the man was under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Police didn't know whether the man was armed.
Investigators believe the man committed an armed robbery elsewhere in Salt Lake County earlier Friday, but details about that incident were not immediately available.
Nobody was injured in the series of crashes.
