By Patrick WiscombeThere are very few times in my career where I've witnessed a newsroom come to a screeching halt. Wednesday was one of those days. As you might imagine, the newsroom is full of activity all day long. If your idea of a great job is NOT knowing what you're going to do when you wake up every morning, being a reporter or radio editor is the perfect job for you. It's a go-go-go job for your entire shift. You have to be ready for any and all breaking news.
Now to what happened. While we were getting ready for our noon news broadcast, Cadie Gregerson, the estranged wife of Craig Gregerson, called into Doug Wright's show and spoke at length about her relationship with Craig. She talked about how she was physically abused by Craig and how her mom was punched by her husband. The newsroom was quiet. The newsroom is NEVER quiet. Television reporters and radio editors literally gathered around the radio to listen to this unfolding real life story. She said she couldn't believe that she was married to somebody that could commit these crimes. It was a riveting 25 minutes of drama that unfolded on the air. While she was talking, I noticed that the booking statement was being released to news agencies and what was contained within that statement was chilling. The statement said suspect Gregerson opened the gate to his backyard and lured Destiny into his house. She began to scream. Suspect Gregerson put his hand over her mouth and began to squeeze. Destiny went limp and he laid her body on the floor.
Even though all of us in the newsroom knew she had died, there's something that's makes your blood run cold when you hear an alleged confession in such detail. As one who covered this story from the beginning, please know that there were many people within this newsroom who were praying for a different outcome and for the Norton family.
