HOUSTON (AP) — Trelun Banks scored 19 points and Southern cruised to an 81-73 victory over top-seeded Texas Southern on Friday night in a Southwestern Athletic Conference Tournament semifinal.
The fourth-seeded Jaguars (21-12) face No. 3 seed Jackson State (19-14) in Saturday's championship at the Toyota Center.
Adrian Rodgers was just 2 of 13 from the field, but made 11 of 13 free-throw attempts and finished with 16 points for Southern. Christopher Hyder added 14 points, six steals and five assists for the Jaguars, who had five score in double figures.
Malcolm Riley had 24 points to lead Texas Southern (18-14).
The Jaguars had a 12-point lead before Texas Southern used a 16-3 run to take its last lead, 50-49, with 15 minutes left. Southern answered with a 16-6 spurt and had a double-digit lead for nearly the rest of the way.
