SALT LAKE CITY — Tom Smart chose to call it a career Tuesday night.
The photojournalist — who first snapped his shutter for the Deseret News in 1971 — packed his Canon camera and lenses away for good. Appropriately it was following a Jazz game, a team he's covered for most of its NBA life in Utah.
In the 45 years since he began at the Deseret News, originally as a copyboy of just 17, Smart's photographed sports legends, newsmakers and presidents.
He's captured gut-wrenching moments of human despair and immeasurable joy. He's covered four Olympic Games and earned a national reputation as one of the best to pick up a camera. His mind's eye has captured some of the most compelling images we've seen.
In the Deseret News and KSL newsrooms, Smart will be missed.
