(KSL News) A state audit has uncovered problems with an affordable housing program in Daggett County that we first exposed in an Eyewitness News Investigation.
We reported Daggett County jail inmates were building homes for $1 an hour, and several of the homes then were being sold to jail guards.
The auditor for the state of Utah saw our investigation and launched his own. He found Daggett County and the state housing division didn't always comply with federal grant guidelines; they needed to disclose more about who was buying the homes and set up rules to keep the houses "affordable."
Although they haven't sold, two of the homes were listed at up to $50,000 more than the original sale price.
State housing officials plan to address the problems found in the audit.
