PRAGUE, Czech Republic, Jul 28, 2006 (UPI via COMTEX) -- British chess prodigy Jessie Gilbert has died after falling from an eighth-floor hotel window in the Czech Republic.

Gilbert, 19, died Wednesday. She was in the Czech Republic to compete in a chess tournament, reports The Times of London. Czech police told the newspaper her death appeared to be either an accident or suicide.

Gilbert was described by family friends as brilliant and having a bright future. Chess experts said she would've become one of the world's best female players.

She was to begin studies in medicine at Oxford in October, the report said.

Since the age of 12, Gilbert had represented her country at World or European Girls' Championships and, in 2001, won the bronze medal in the European Girls' Under-14 Championship. At this year's World Chess Olympiad in Italy she was the eighth-ranked English female player.
