JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) — The Latest on a bill that would bar representatives of abortion services providers from providing instruction of any kind in public schools (all times local):
5:25 p.m.
A bill that would bar representatives of abortion services providers from providing instruction of any kind in public schools was heard for the first time in a Senate Education committee Thursday.
Nearly 20 people lined the hallway outside of the committee room before the hearing started. Sen. Mike Dunleavy has said the bill is a companion to a measure that would stop abortion services providers from teaching sex education in public schools. That bill recently passed the Senate.
Dunleavy says prohibiting abortion service providers from getting into schools will allow private, sensitive matters to remain in the hands of parents and families.
The bill will be heard by the education committee next week. Dunleavy says he'd open it for public comment then.

Lawmakers will consider a bill that a legislative attorney says could violate provisions of the state and U.S. constitutions.
Republican Sen. Mike Dunleavy's SB 191 would restrict representatives of abortion services providers from providing instruction of any kind in public schools. It lays out penalties for violations for teachers, doctors and abortion services providers who violate the restrictions.
The Senate Education Committee is set to hear the bill on Thursday.
Legislative attorney Kate Glover says the measure could violate the free speech rights of teachers and abortion providers by preventing them from associating. Glover, in a memo requested by Democratic Sen. Berta Gardner, says the bill also raises equal protection questions because it singles out representatives of abortion services providers for differential treatment.
