MADRID (AP) — Spanish club Athletic Bilbao says it has renewed the contract of coach Ernesto Valverde for another season, keeping him at the club until June 2017.
The 52-year-old Valverde has led the Basque team to some of its greatest successes recently. Athletic was runner-up to Barcelona in the Copa del Rey final last season and won the Spanish Super Cup over the Catalan club for its first trophy in more than 30 years.
Under Valverde's command, Athletic also qualified for the Champions League.
The club is seventh in this year's Spanish league, 25 points behind leader Barcelona. It plays at Sporting Gijon on Sunday in the 28th round.
