SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) — Syracuse tailback Devante McFarlane has left the football program.
McFarlane, who was slated to be the starter last season before freshman Jordan Fredericks emerged, rushed for 563 yards on 111 carries and scored one touchdown in 34 games for the Orange. His rushing totals had decreased in each of the past three seasons under former head coach Scott Shafer, from 292 yards in 2013 to 102 yards last fall.
The fifth-year senior from Long Island becomes the sixth player to leave the program since Dino Babers was hired as coach in December. He's the second to leave voluntarily, joining wide receiver Ben Lewis.
Defensive linemen Amir Ealey, Qaadir Sheppard, Kenny Carter, and offensive lineman Alex Hayes were dismissed for violations of team rules.
The university confirmed McFarlane's departure on Tuesday.
