SANDY — With its multimillion-dollar renovation in progress, South Towne Center has been renamed to give the center a new identity.
"The Shops at South Town" is the new name of the popular shopping center in Sandy. In a press release from the center's owners, Pacific Retail Capital Partners, the updated name is just one of many changes taking place in the 1.3 million-square-foot shopping center. The center's renovation started last August. Since an artist's rendering of the renovated center was displayed last July, "towne" was changed for "town" in the name.
"The vision for The Shops at South Town is an outdoor-oriented lifestyle center concept," said Annmarie Brintnall, retail centers practice area leader for design and architecture firm Gensler, responsible for the center's renovation. "We are turning the traditional model of a mall — an enclosed collection of stores — on its head and repositioning the shopping center as a fully activated lifestyle center."
Some of the renovations include larger windows, an expanded outdoor terrace, larger dining terrace, modern flooring and a larger, more interactive children's play area.
"The Shops at South Town will become a gathering space, a 'base camp' that melds the outdoor feel of our adjacent mountains and the nexus of our tech-forward, environmental lifestyles inviting people to connect, eat, shop and play, said Brintnall.
Some of the center's stores include Macy's, J.C. Penney and Forever 21. The shopping center will remain open throughout the renovation.
"The renovation process is moving ahead full speed," said Gary Karl, chief operating officer at Pacific Retail Capital Partners. "In the coming months, customers will begin to experience remarkable improvements in the shopping center as we create a vibrant, contemporary, outdoor inspired shopping experience with more retailers, entertainment and dining options to serve customers of all ages."
The Shops at South Town's renovation is scheduled for completion this November.
