OGDEN — Crews are working to off-load cattle, both dead and alive, from a semitruck after the vehicle tipped on I-15 near I-84 Monday morning.
The semitruck hauling cattle was heading southbound on I-15 to go east on I-84 when its driver took the corner too fast, according to Sgt. Todd Royce of the Utah Highway Patrol. He said the semitruck tipped over at about 10 a.m.
"The driver of the cattle truck was traveling too fast to safely negotiate the overpass and ran into the right hand side of the structure which is suspended over I-15," a statement from UHP reads. "The trailer full of cattle overturned onto the right hand side of the trailer and partially over the guardrail."
Many of the cattle are dead, but some are reportedly still alive. The condition of the driver has not yet been released.
The accident caused major delays, with some commuters reporting that it took more than an hour for them to get from Ogden to Riverdale. A closure remained in place for the eastbound lanes of I-84 as of 5 p.m. while workers continued to remove dead cows from the trailer.
The southbound lanes of I-15 were closed after the accident, but reopened at about 2 p.m.
