MUNFORD, Tenn. (AP) — An auto body shop worker in Munford, Tennessee, says he was "freaking out" when he heard that one of the three winning tickets in last night's Powerball drawing was sold in his town. But Jerry Caudle found that he had matched only two numbers -- for a prize of $14. In all, $1.6 billion was at stake in last night's drawing. The other two winners were sold in Florida and in the Los Angeles suburb of Chino Hills, where a crowd gathered to celebrate outside the store where the ticket was sold.
CHICAGO (AP) — A federal judge has granted the release of 2013 surveillance video showing a white Chicago police officer fatally shoot a 17-year-old black carjacking suspect. The judge today lifted an order barring the release after the city dropped its objections. Mayor Rahm Emanuel's administration and the police force have come under scrutiny in recent months over police shootings and cases of alleged misconduct. The officer shot Cedrick Chatman during a January 2013 foot chase. He said he fired after seeing Chatman turn toward officers with a dark object in his hand. Investigators later determined it was an iPhone box.
CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson has announced the resignation of his campaign finance chairman Dean Parker, who has come under scrutiny for lavish spending. Carson has recently slipped in national polls amid infighting among his inner circle and questions about his qualifications. Carson lost his campaign manager and communications director in December. Parker's departure comes on the morning of one of the last two GOP debates before voting begins with the Feb. 1 Iowa caucuses.
BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — President Barack Obama is congratulating Louisiana's new governor on plans to expand Medicaid — and saying John Bel Edwards' first task is to "clean up some stuff" after his Republican predecessor. Gov. Republican Bobby Jindal left office this week, having earlier dropped out of the GOP presidential race. Jindal had refused to expand Medicaid, saying it would be too costly. But Obama said Edwards' move is a "bold and wise step" and will actually help state finances. Obama has been taking questions today at a high school in a mostly African-American neighborhood in Baton Rouge.
LORAIN, Ohio (AP) — A northern Ohio man who recorded grisly cellphone video of a car crash that killed one teenager and critically injured another has been sentenced to 30 days in jail. The judge who sentenced Paul Pelton for vehicle trespass and disorderly conduct says he wishes he could've gone beyond the maximum penalty. Prosecutors say Pelton opened a door of the wrecked vehicle to continue recording while others tried to help the two teens. Police said Pelton can be heard on the video calling the teens "idiots."
