UNITED NATIONS (AP) — The U.N. Security Council has been holding an emergency meeting today, hours after North Korea announced it had conducted its first hydrogen bomb test. The British ambassador says the Security Council is expected to strongly condemn the test and prepare more sanctions against North Korea. The Security Council has imposed four sets of sanctions against North Korea since the country's first nuclear test in 2006.
BALTIMORE (AP) — The trial for the van driver in the death of Freddie Gray will remain in Baltimore. A Baltimore judge today denied a defense motion to move the proceedings and also ruled that jurors will be anonymous but not sequestered. Caesar Goodson faces the most serious charge of the six officers accused in Gray's death and has pleaded not guilty. Gray died after suffering a spinal injury while in police custody.
BAGHDAD (AP) — The Islamic State group has stepped up attacks on the western Iraqi town of Haditha (hah-DEE'-thuh), where at least 45 Iraqi security forces and Sunni tribal fighters have been killed in clashes over the past three days. The attacks come a week after Iraqi forces aided by U.S.-led airstrikes drove IS militants out of the city center of Ramadi.
TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — Iraq is offering to mediate between Saudi Arabia and Iran amid heightened tensions after the kingdom's execution of a Shiite cleric. Saudi Arabia severed diplomatic ties with Tehran after protesters attacked two Saudi diplomatic posts in the Iran. The dispute threatens to affect the implementation of the Iran nuclear deal, and could hinder efforts to resolve the conflicts in Syria and Yemen, where Saudi Arabia and Iran back opposite sides.
LONDON (AP) — It's a milestone for the heir to the British throne. Kensington Palace says Prince George started nursery school today. Prince William and his wife Kate marked the occasion by releasing two photographs of their two-and-a-half-year-old son outside the school building. He's attending a Montessori School in Norfolk, north of London. The school has said he'll receive the same treatment as other pupils.
