BURNS, Ore. (AP) — Federal authorities have yet to respond to the takeover of a remote wildlife refuge in Oregon by armed anti-government protesters. The group says it is protesting the prison sentences of two ranchers who set fire to federal land. Residents of the tiny town of Burns are concerned about the potential for violence.
CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — A South Carolina judge has approved bond for a fired police officer charged with last April's shooting of an unarmed black motorist. Former North Charleston officer Michael Slager was released after posting a 500,000 surety bond. His trial date has been set for late October. That's because the same prosecutor is handling the July trial of the white suspect in the killings of nine people at a black church in Charleston.
WASHINGTON (AP) — The White House is urging Saudi Arabia and Iran to not let their diplomatic spat derail talks to end Syria's conflict. A spokesman is urging Saudi Arabia and Iran to show restraint. But President Barack Obama has not spoken with the leaders of either country since Saudi Arabia started scaling back diplomatic ties with Iran. The Saudis are incensed over the ransacking of their diplomatic missions in Iran, which was prompted by the Saudi execution of a prominent opposition Shiite cleric.
NEW YORK (AP) —Investors worried about new signs of a slowdown in China and a flare-up in tensions between Saudi Arabia and Iran are skittish. The Dow lost 276 points, its biggest loss in two weeks. The S&P lost 31 points. The Nasdaq declined 104 points.
